Who Does God Say I Am? 7 Defining Scriptures

Updated: Oct 8, 2018

Who does God say I am? 7 Scripture affirmations. Biblical identity. Who I am in Christ.

Confession: For most of my life I have struggled with this question.

Who am I?

Who does God say I am? 7 affirmations. Biblical identity. Scripture affirmations.

The world we live in today is full of voices. That combined with my natural tendency to please people above all else can make for a pretty ugly combination.

I often find myself mulling over thoughtless words spoke in jest by an acquaintance, wondering what do they really think about me?

I have at times taken the best intended constructive criticism and allowed it to break me to the point of giving up.

I have allowed both my failures and my success to define how I see myself.

Can you relate?

If so this list is for you!

Ultimately we must come to the place where we realize who we are is defined by the One who created us, the One who sees every part of us.

So, what does God have to say?

1) You are on purpose. No, not some random act of organisms colliding. God created YOU.

Psalm 139: 13-14 "For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well."

2)You are valuable. Made in the very image of the Almighty God.

Genesis 1:26-27 " Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness...So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them;male and female he created them."

3) You are loved. Abundantly. The kind of love that gives up their very life for you.

1 John 4:10 " This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins."

7 Scripture affirmations. Biblical identity. Who I am in Christ. Who does God say I am?

4)You are forgiven. Your past mistakes no longer get to define you.

1 John 1:9 "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness."

5)You are made new. He is at work in you and nothing you have done can mess that up.

2 Corinthians 5:17 "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come:The old has gone, the new is here!"

6)You are God's Child. An ere of the King.

Galatians 3:26 " So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith"

7)You are NOT forgotten. The God of all creation thinks of you.

Psalm 139:17-18 " How precious to me are your thoughts,God!How vast is the sum of them! Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand

So, today, amidst the voices, may THE true voice ring clear in your heart. You ARE who He says you are, and He says you are pretty darn fantastic!

This is a great list!! I don't have all the references right now, but I love the verses that talk about how we are equipped for every work that God has given us, and that we are called according to his purpose to do good things.

I pray that my children know these truths as well. It is one of my biggest prayers.

I love your list! I struggle with this regularly. As a "people-pleaser" I often take criticism and comment too tender hearted, and boy is this world and the enemy full of criticism! It helps to remember to only listen to that still small voice in my heart and that the only one I am accountable to is God. I must find more time to listen to Him and less to everyone else!

Great reminders! We can fall into thinking we aren't special or useful to God many times!

Jeremiah 29:11 is my favorite verse!
